Nothing compares to those tiny, heirloom strawberries or plump, just picked blueberries&#8230; It&#8217;s easy to get carried away and take home several pints of fresh berries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hardcoremethod.com\/blogtest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/images2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-337 aligncenter\" title=\"images\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hardcoremethod.com\/blogtest\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/images2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The catch is, the berries are fresh and they don&#8217;t last very long. But there are a couple of ways to help keep your berries from going moldy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prep<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cooksillustrated.com\/howto\/print\/detail.asp?docid=1417&amp;parentdocid=2214\">Cook&#8217;s Illustrated<\/a> recommends you wash your berries in a solution of 3 cups water and 1 cup white vinegar for at least 30 seconds. Then rinse. Line your <a href=\"http:\/\/rcm.amazon.com\/e\/cm?t=harmet01-20&amp;o=1&amp;p=8&amp;l=as1&amp;asins=B00004OCKR&amp;ref=qf_sp_asin_til&amp;fc1=000000&amp;IS2=1&amp;lt1=_blank&amp;m=amazon&amp;lc1=0000FF&amp;bc1=000000&amp;bg1=FFFFFF&amp;f=ifr\">salad spinner <\/a>with three lines of paper towels, place the rinsed berries inside, and spin the berries until completely dry.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Harold McGee from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/26\/dining\/26curi.html\">New York Times<\/a> recommends you place your berries in a very hot bath (water that&#8217;s not boiling, but close) for 30 seconds to kill any mold spores.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Storage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have ample storage space in your refrigerator, you can spread the berries out on paper towel lined cookie sheets so that the berries aren&#8217;t touching. Alternatively, if you have a small refrigerator, you can store the berries in a paper-towel lined covered container with the lid partially askew.
